James Discovers Math

Very young kids will appreciate James Discovers Math (part of the Active Mind series from Broderbund Software, ages 3-6). James, a young blonde fellow with an Australian accent, lives in a room full of different math games. He also carries around a book that reads I Love Math, which gives you an idea of what kind of lad he is. The disc contains extremely basic games – most of them have less to do with arithmetic than with simple concepts like small, medium, and large (the exception is an addition and subtraction exercise using frogs and fruit). Match shapes with empty spaces, tell time, and color things. The rendering is ordinary and the sounds are flatulent, but little kids don’t mind – they’re pleased by the simplicity, the non-threatening ambiance, and, well, the flatulent sound effects. Six-year-olds might find this disc a little young, but three and four-year-olds should be right at home.

‘Extremely basic’ sounds like a good start for a math video game for kids ages 3 to 6 . I haven’t heard of “James Discovers Math” before, but it sounds like an effective way of getting young students engaged with the math basics.
