Exploration (Interactive Magic) allows you to choose one of five real-life explorers – Chris Columbus is the default – and then go colonizing. Both combat skills and diplomacy are necessary, if your exploration and conquest are to be successful. The game is similar to many which have come before, borrowing its overall look from the early Ultima series, and its conception from countless role-playing simulations. Although there’s nothing wrong with the game, and it can be fun to poke around, this is a DOS program, and it shows. Graphics, play-action, and scope are all on a Super Nintendo level, which is a far cry from the ‘incredible depth’ promised on the package. If you’re looking for a game that uses the CD-ROM medium to blaze new trails of interactivity (like Myst) or just to improve on old standbys (like Doom), look farther than this.
