Interactive Complete Joy of Home Brewing
The rallying cry of zymurgist Charlie Papazian is “Relax. Don’t worry. Have a homebrew.” The Interactive Complete Joy of Home Brewing (MediaRight Technology) offers this wisdom at every possible opportunity, even when there’s no obvious cause for alarm – the most benign discussion of hops is followed by the heartfelt advice, “Relax. Don’t worry. Have a homebrew.” The disc has ported Mr. Papazian’s book, The New Complete Joy of Home Brewing, to CD-ROM, and in the process has dressed up the original content with a smattering of video, a very limited selection of music, and some trendy perks, like a summary of beer on the Internet and a built-in calculator. The video explanations, which show Mr. Papazian puttering around in a kitchen, are no more helpful than simple diagrams. Other multimedia – like the songs of different nationalities that are meant to represent what you might hear in different pubs around the world – are dispensable fluff. Although the program could be of use to home-brewers ranging from amateur to inspired, there’s no real reason for it to be on a CD-ROM; the book worked just as well. But why concern yourself with that? Relax. Don’t worry. Drink up.
