Best of Breed: the American Kennel Club?s Multimedia Guide to Dogs
Best of Breed: the American Kennel Club?s Multimedia Guide to Dogs (Macmillan Digital USA) is jam-packed with all kinds of doggie-info concerning the 140 breeds recognized by the AKC, but it does not quite measure up to the “comprehensive interactive resource” promised by the packaging. Browse the world of dogs breed by breed, or pinpoint a specific strain of canine with the Index. Need help choosing a dog? “Pick a Pet” allows you to set parameters based on size, living space, shedding, and compatibility with children to find the best dogs suited to your particular lifestyle. The “Caring” section provides a wealth of information about dogs? health, including an index of diseases, grooming and training tips, and a special section dealing with euthanasia. The information provided by Best of Breed is doubtlessly valuable, and the partnership with the AKC gives it an impeccable pedigree, but the presentation could use some work. You?ll find yourself scrolling through blocks of text on nearly every screen, supplemented by a few slides and an occasional short video. There?s not much to do but sit back and watch; interactivity is the exception rather than the rule in this program.
