The Logical Journey of the Zoombinis
The Logical Journey of the Zoombinis (Broderbund – ages 8-12) has a less-than-catchy title, but don’t be put off. It is, in fact, entertaining, interactive, and completely engrossing. The Zoombinis, little round somethings, need your help to get from Zoombini Isle to Zoombiniville. During the trip, they’ll face twelve different challenges. In the first one, Allergic Cliffs, as they try to cross a bridge, something about certain Zoombinis makes the cliffs sneeze. When this happens, the Zoombinis are sent flying. What features are causing this allergic reaction? Zoombinins with red hair, flat feet, or one eye? In Pizza Pass, you need to figure out what toppings Arno, the omnivorous tree troll, likes on his pizzas before he’ll let the Zoombinis through. Solving each challenge requires logic, deductive reasoning, and skills like sorting, pattern-recognition, lateral thinking, and an understanding of cause and effect. Since the challenges are sequential, you’ll have to master each one in order before you can move ahead. The game has great graphics, music that complements the action, and plenty of humor, but it’s the original methods of teaching that make Logical Journey a must-see.
