Volcanoes: Life on the Edge

Volcanoes: Life on the Edge (Corbis) explores this fascinating subject with considerable aplomb.Using photographs as the primary medium, several different kinds of slide shows are offered; they are called “narratives” if they feature animation and voice-overs, or “episodes” if they offer a handful of stills and some text. This disc, like the Flagtower “interactive documentaries”, manages to both educate and entertain, although there’s no real reason for it to be on CD-ROM – a videotape would serve nearly as well. Volcanoes recreates the journey of photojournalist Roger Ressmeyer, who spent fourteen months chasing erupting volcanoes around the world. His quest is, by turns, sobering, exhilarating, and terrifying, and the disc manages to pass these emotions on to the viewer. Not bad for a glorified slide show. Helen Mirren adds a touch of class as the narrator. Volcanoes is not for the faint of heart, nor is it for those who demand real interactivity from their computer. For the rest of us, it is a singular and memorable multimedia experience.
