The Adventures of Pinocchio
The Adventures of Pinocchio (Orange Cherry/New Media Schoolhouse – ages 9 & up) opens with three choices: Start Story, Questions, and Quit Program. Start the story and you get a chapter menu with the option to go directly to one of the three “Living pages” which have a small number of hotspots. This is not promising. As you read or are read to, there are vocabulary hotspots providing definitions. There are no other hotspots, but one page per chapter does animate – all by itself. The illustrations are appropriate for a book; they’re not nearly lively enough for a computer screen. You can also answer four questions at the end of each chapter to test your reading comprehension. Given the extremely limited use of multimedia, wouldn’t you be happier curled up in a chair with a nice fat version of the book on your lap?
