Goosebumps: Escape from Horrorland
Goosebumps: Escape from Horrorland (DreamWorks Interactive – ages 8 & up), based on the ubiquitous books by R.L. Stine, is an interactive adventure game that challenges you to help Lizzy, Luke, and Clay escape from the evil clutches of Horrorland. A effective blend of live-action video and computer graphics, Horrorland offers refreshingly intelligent ruses to challenge you at every turn. The environment is sparkly and spooky, filled with dark-blue shadows that approximate darkness without obscuring a single detail. This just-scary-enough ambiance is thoroughly Spielbergian, which, considering the developers, shouldn’t come as a surprise. As you explore Horrorland with Lizzy, you search for clues and collect as many tokens as possible; these constitute your score, and can also be spent for hints. Rotting pieces of meat, wandering cockroaches, and various other disgusting things should be picked up and held in your inventory (they’ll come in handy later). The fancy graphics challenged our system, so Horrorland ran in stops and starts on our computer, but if you’ve got the right equipment and children of the right age, the disc should provide a few memorably eerie evenings.
