American Visions: 20th Century Art from the Roy R. Neuberger Collection
If your taste runs to contemporary art, American Visions: 20th Century Art from the Roy R. Neuberger Collection (Creative Labs, Inc.) should get your attention. Combining photographs, videos, critical commentary, and text, this CD-ROM does two things well. It provides an impressive gallery of 20th Century art, and it conveys the sense and sensibility of the collector. The personal recollections of Roy Neuberger are an important ingredient; they serve as an anchor, holding together diverse elements. The excellent photographs of the artists, primarily by the photographer Hans Namuth, add immeasurably to the content. This is an easy disc to navigate, but it does have some irritating features. First, it has the longest and most tedious explanation of how the program works that we have ever experienced. Second, it is necessary to return to Browse after viewing anything – it’s impossible to jump around in the text or move from the index to the pictures or to the artist. This gets to be a drag. Technical flaws notwithstanding, we give high marks to American Visions.
