Pocahontas Animated Storybook
The Pocahontas Animated Storybook (Disney Interactive – ages 3-9) is, like all the other Disney titles, slick and glossy. It includes the requisite shooting games alongside a few conventional matching activities. The bulk of the disc, however, is the interactive storybook. This is Pocahontas Disney-style, and anybody who saw the movie knows what that means: a full-grown Princess (past the age of 20), a misunderstood and sweet-hearted colonizer, and lots of environmentally-conscious themes. It also means an ending with more resonance than most Disney stories, in which lovers do not live together happily ever after. The quality of animation and smoothness of the program makes it difficult to find anything to criticize, but after applying ourselves we’ve come up with our most common complaint about “interactive storybooks” – the animations should be capable of firing simultaneously, instead of always sequentially. Other than that, the disc is a by-the-book example of expert merchandising and decent children’s software. Fans of the movie will find plenty to enjoy.
