Gahan Wilson’s Ultimate Haunted House
The manual describes Gahan Wilson’s Ultimate Haunted House (Microsoft Home/Byron Preiss Multimedia – ages 8 & up) as “13 mysterious rooms…and wacky activities,” but Ultimate Haunted House is primarily a game, complete with time limit. Move around the house and click, drag, experiment, explore, and so on. Find 13 keys before the clock strikes 13 and live to face another day. You can play simple games (Hang Man, Tic-Tac-Toe), watch video clips, make a stew with eyeballs, make music assembled from various gross body sounds, and browse through a gallery of Wilson’s cartoons. He’s a first-rate cartoonist, and the game is based on his drawings, but the clunky interface often causes jerky animation which doesn’t do them justice. With a bit more technological finesse, the interface would work better and so would the game. Even with these problems, this is an original title with plenty of surprises and built in weirdness.
