Alien Tales
Alien Tales (Broderbund – ages 9-13) is a good new title. It’s designed as a game show pitting you against animated aliens claiming to be the authors of favorite books, commonly assumed to have been written by Earthlings. Reading passages of text from books like The Secret Garden, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, Treasure Island, and the like, helps you answer true and false questions to get a puzzle piece. When you solve a puzzle, the alien loses. In round two, crossword puzzles are the game device, while the third round features matching games. The emphasis is on the stories as much as it is on winning the games, which provides an educational benefit but doesn’t detract from the fun. Younger kids can play with a parent. Older ones can handle it on their own.
